Nationwide: Nationwide’s standard policy includes coverage for your debit and credit cards. Also, Nationwide includes coverage that would pay to bring your home up to current building codes after a covered loss. One of Nationwide’s add-on options would provide replacement cost coverage for your belongings. Nationwide would pay you for the depreciated value of your belongings after a covered loss, and reimburse you for the difference after you repaired or replaced them.

Liberty Mutual: While Liberty Mutual has some of the more common policy add-ons available for water backup and valuable items, it also offers inflation protection. This would automatically adjust your coverage limits to match inflation at the renewal of your homeowners policy. There are also several discounts available, including for bundling, going paperless, purchasing your policy online, and being claim-free.

Chubb: Chubb’s standard policy, Chubb Masterpiece Homeowners, will cover everything from standard coverage for your home, personal belongings, liability, and alternative living expenses to water backup, which is often an add-on with many insurers. Replacement cost coverage is also included, which pays to replace your belongings after a covered event without taking any depreciation of their value. Plus, Chubb offers its own flood insurance, separate from that offered by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Your personal homeowners insurance policy in Miami will vary depending on how much coverage you’re looking for, where you live, your home’s value, and a number of other factors. Many insurance companies offer completely customizable policies since every homeowner will have different needs.

In the tables below, we look at our top-rated companies that offer policies in Miami. These policies offer $100,000 or $300,000 in liability coverage paired with various dwelling coverage amounts. The exact price you pay will vary.

How To Save Money on Homeowners Insurance in Miami

Some quick and easy ways to save on your homeowners insurance include:

  • Take advantage of discounts. Every company in our rating offers some sort of discount that you likely qualify for. There are bundling discounts for having multiple policies with the same company, security system discounts, renovation discounts, and more.
  • Shop around for a better rate. One mistake many people make is sticking with an insurance company for too long. Once you’ve established a long history of paying on time and you have a good credit score, you’re a prime candidate for low rates. Taking a few minutes to shop around can give you a sense of what other companies are offering, and whether you can score a better rate.
  • Make home improvements. Home improvements like adding a home security system or adding smoke detectors can help lower your rates because it makes your home safer, so the insurance company is less likely to have to pay out for a claim.

When deciding on the right home insurance company, you’ll need to consider what you need for your home, while also keeping your premium within your means.

If you have a lot of high-value items, you may want to consider getting additional coverage to protect them. In addition, if you have a garage, shed, or other outbuildings, you’ll want to make sure those are covered.

Your average homeowners insurance policy in Miami might cover damage to your home and property.

Liability coverage is also generally included. So if someone is injured while on your property or your pet causes an accident, you’ll be covered. Some policies will also cover living arrangements if your home were to become uninhabitable for a period of time.

Ultimately, the coverage you get will depend on the policy options you’ve chosen and any additional coverage you choose to go with.

Flood and earthquake insurance are two policies you may want to seriously consider purchasing if you live in Miami.

Your regular homeowners policy won’t cover damage from floods. While hurricane damage may be covered by your standard policy, flooding (even due to natural disasters) is typically an entirely separate policy. The companies on this list that do have an add-on will not offer flood insurance directly, but rather they’ll help you get it through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The exception to this is Chubb, which offers its own flood insurance policies unaffiliated with the NFIP.

Like flooding, damage done by earthquakes won’t be covered by your typical homeowners insurance policy. You would either need an endorsement to your standard homeowners policy or an entirely separate policy to receive earthquake coverage.

For specific guidance on getting earthquake coverage, you’ll want to ask your insurance agent for more information.

Take a look at the table below to learn whether or not flooding and earthquake policies are available.

Yes* denotes that the coverage is available for purchase through the insurer, but the insurance may ultimately be from an external program, such as the NFIP (flood), CEA (California Earthquake Authority), or another partner (ie. Palomar for Lemonade Earthquake).

Yes** denotes that an HO-3 homeowners policy with the insurer typically covers fire damage, but wildfires may be specifically excluded or coverage may be limited depending on your location.

No* denotes that, while a company does not participate in the NFIP, customers can enroll and report claims to agents and/or directly to the NFIP.

At U.S. News & World Report, we rank the Best Hospitals, Best Colleges, and Best Cars to guide readers through some of life’s most complicated decisions. Our 360 Reviews team draws on this same unbiased approach to rate the products that you use every day. To build our ratings, we researched more than 24 homeowners insurance companies and agencies and analyzed 15 third-party review sources. Our 360 Reviews team does not take samples, gifts, or loans of products or services we review. All sample products provided for review are donated after review. In addition, we maintain a separate business team that has no influence over our methodology or recommendations.

For this study, U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of publicly available insurance rates using all the available ZIP codes in Miami for the insurance companies in our rating of the Best Homeowners Insurance Companies of 2022 that operate in that state. The insurance rates in our study are based on sample rates for a 47-year-old, married applicant household with a 728 FICO credit score. The rates were obtained for a HO3 policy covering a wood frame house with 10% Other Structures Coverage, 20% Loss of Use Coverage, 50% Personal Property Coverage, and a guest medical limit of $5,000.

Our goal is to empower consumers with the information and tools they need to make informed decisions. More information about our 360 Reviews methodology for evaluating homeowners insurance companies is here.
