Farmers: Farmers Insurance’s branded insurance policies, Smart Home Plan, offers three different standard homeowners insurance tiers: Standard, Enhanced, and Premier. Each tier has different coverage amounts and features, with the Standard being the lowest coverage amount, Enhanced offering higher coverage limits, and so forth. These tiers also are customizable. Interestingly, cosmetic damage is also covered when you file a claim for functional or structural damage to your dwelling.

Besides typical discounts, Farmers has some interesting ways to save on a homeowners insurance policy, including a decrease in your deductible each year you keep your policy. And if you’re claim-free with Farmers for five straight years, should you file a claim, your premium won’t experience a bump as a result.

Homeowners insurance costs in Oklahoma depend on the insurer, the types of coverage and policy amounts, and your deductible. Typically, the higher the policy amounts, the higher your rates. The lower your deductible, the higher your premium, and vice versa. Your policy might also be lower if you are claim-free or if you live in a newer home in a low-risk neighborhood. During the approval process, your rate can also depend on your individual profile, such as your credit score and history.

We looked at average annual premiums for different major insurers that carried homeowners insurance policies for all ZIP codes with $100,000 liability and $300,000 liability coverage for homes with different amounts of dwelling coverage.

How to Save Money on Homeowners Insurance in Oklahoma

There are a handful of discounts major insurance companies typically offer. Common ones include a discount if you bundle two policies together, such as your auto and homeowners insurance, if you’re in a newer home, if you’ve been claim-free for a period of time, or if you’ve been a longtime policyholder with the insurance company. You can also shave off some of the cost of your policy by installing devices such as deadbolts, a burglar alarm, or a smoke detector.

Some companies offer discounts that are less common, such as a declining deductible or a discount for serving in the military, but it depends on the insurance company.

When shopping around for a homeowners insurance policy, the key is to look at exactly what types of coverage are included in a policy, the coverage limits, and deductibles. Also, see if it’s a cash value policy or a replacement cost policy.

Coverage that is usually add-on options or separate policies, such as identity theft, valuable possessions (i.e., art, jewelry, collectibles), and flood and earthquake coverage should also be considered.

If you have coverage needs that are specific to you – for instance, you want to have your memorabilia collection protected, or you have a work-from-home business and would like coverage for business equipment – then look at companies that offer these types of coverage.

A standard homeowners insurance policy in Oklahoma covers the cost to repair or replace your dwelling and other structures, such as a shed, driveway, gazebo, or garage; liability, in case someone is accidentally injured or their property damaged; and loss of use. Should your place be uninhabitable and you need to temporarily uproot, a standard homeowners insurance policy can cover meals out and a place to stay, comparable to your standard lifestyle. Depending on the insurer, identity theft and water backup might be included.

A separate earthquake or flood policy might be available.

Homeowners insurance is not required in the state of Oklahoma. However, if you have a federally backed mortgage, then you will be required to carry homeowners insurance, and put the lender as an insured on your policy.

Does Oklahoma Require Any Special Homeowners Insurance Coverage?

The state of Oklahoma does not require any special homeowners insurance coverage. If you are running into issues getting a policy, the Oklahoma Market Assistance Program might be able to help. You can contact them by phone or visit www.mapsprogram.com.

Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is not required by law in Oklahoma. However, if you have a mortgage and live in a high-risk flood zone, then federal law requires that you have flood insurance. As mentioned, flood insurance is not part of a standard policy and would need to be purchased as a separate policy. Even if you don’t live in a flood hazard area, it might be a good idea to purchase a flood policy to have coverage against water damage. That’s because one inch of water damage can cause $20,000 in damage to your home. To find the flood risk of property in your area, you can visit FEMA’s Floodsmart.gov. When you purchase a flood policy for homeowners insurance, there’s usually a 30-day wait period before your policy kicks in. If you’re unable to get flood insurance, you might be able to get assistance from the Oklahoma Insurance Department.

Earthquake Insurance

Earthquake insurance is not required in Oklahoma. Earthquake insurance coverage covers repairing and replacing property and can also cover your belongings if they’re damaged during an earthquake. What’s excluded depends on the specific policy. A policy can be purchased from a private insurance company.

Yes* denotes that the coverage is available for purchase through the insurer, but the insurance may ultimately be from an external program, such as the NFIP (flood), CEA (California Earthquake Authority), or another partner (ie. Palomar for Lemonade Earthquake).

Yes** denotes that an HO-3 homeowners policy with the insurer typically covers fire damage, but wildfires may be specifically excluded or coverage may be limited depending on your location.

No* denotes that, while a company does not participate in the NFIP, customers can enroll and report claims to agents and/or directly to the NFIP.
