Your homeowners policy’s cost depends on several factors like your ZIP code, the condition and age of your home, and how much coverage you need. A personalized quote will provide you the context you need to directly compare one company to another.

Quotes can help you determine a starting point, as well. To that end, we’ve compiled the available rate data for our top-ranking companies available in Tampa. Our figures are based on $100,000 or $300,000 of liability coverage across several levels of dwelling coverage.

How To Save Money on Homeowners Insurance in Tampa

There are several ways you can save money on home insurance. One method requires you to give something up, by either lowering your coverage amount or increasing your deductible. However, that can leave you in financial trouble if your home needs costly repairs. A better method to lower your costs is to look for discounts.

Depending on the company, you may see options like bundling, loyalty, claims-free, and military discounts available. The more you can access, the lower your premium can go. So, you can cut costs by looking for companies that provide discounts you’re likely to qualify for.

Cost is an important factor when deciding which insurer to go with, but it’s also important to consider what that cost is buying you. For example, if you are surrounded by lots of trees you’ll want to have enough coverage for any repairs due to a falling branch or tree. Or, if you have a shed or driveway on your property, you’ll want to make sure that your coverage includes separate structures, or at least offers the option to add that on. In other words, the cheapest option may not be the best one, depending on your situation.

A standard homeowners policy in Florida will cover things like your dwelling and attached structures, some unattached structures, and your personal property. That means damages to your house’s structure or your furniture will be covered. You’ll also likely see liability and ‘additional living expense’ coverage, also known as loss of use.

Flood insurance provides coverage for water damages specifically caused by a flood. While a homeowners policy will cover certain water-related damages resulting burst or backed up pipe, flooding and flood-related damages won’t be covered.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance policies, which can be purchased from many of the companies in our rating. For more information about flooding, you can go to FloodSmart.gov. And you can visit FEMA’s website to see the flood risk for your home based on your address.

Similar to flood insurance, earthquake coverage fills specific home insurance coverage gaps. For instance, if your house were to have foundation damage from an earthquake, your home policy wouldn’t cover that. However, an earthquake endorsement or policy would cover it. To learn more about earthquake insurance or getting a policy, you should talk to your insurance agent or company.

Yes* denotes that the coverage is available for purchase through the insurer, but the insurance may ultimately be from an external program, such as the NFIP (flood), CEA (California Earthquake Authority), or another partner (ie. Palomar for Lemonade Earthquake).

Yes** denotes that an HO-3 homeowners policy with the insurer typically covers fire damage, but wildfires may be specifically excluded or coverage may be limited depending on your location.

No* denotes that, while a company does not participate in the NFIP, customers can enroll and report claims to agents and/or directly to the NFIP.

In addition, we maintain a separate business team that has no influence over our methodology or recommendations.

For this study, U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of publicly available insurance rates using all the available ZIP codes in Tampa for the insurance companies in our rating of the Best Homeowners Insurance Companies of 2023 that operate in that city. The insurance rates in our study are based on sample rates for a 47-year-old, married applicant household with a 728 FICO credit score. The rates were obtained for a HO3 policy covering a wood frame house with 10% Other Structures Coverage, 20% Loss of Use Coverage, 50% Personal Property Coverage, and a guest medical limit of $5,000.

Our goal is to empower consumers with the information and tools they need to make informed decisions. More information about our 360 Reviews methodology for evaluating homeowners insurance companies is here.
