NCAA DIII football: SJU

In a shutout game, St. John’s University beat Northwestern-St. Paul 49-0 Saturday to continue on to the second round of the NCAA DIII football championship tournament.

The Johnnies were up by 35 at halftime after five straight scoring drives led by junior quarterback Aaron Syverson in the coldest weather SJU has played in in over 20 years.

“It means a lot to get the momentum going early,” Syverson said in a press release from St. John’s University. “The defense was playing really well early and the offense was clicking. That’s how the coaches draw it up − start hot and keep it going the whole game.”

The Johnnies will play Wartburg College at noon Saturday in round two.
