While Lunar New Year isn’t until January 22, you can ring in the Year of the Rabbit starting Saturday, January 14 at many festive events around Houston. Enjoy an array of arts and crafts, lion dances, Asian markets, traditional food and parties for all ages.
The Lunar New Year is a celebration of a new year on the lunar calendar, also known as lunisolar calendar, and the arrival of spring. Some of the traditions include a thorough house-cleaning and cooking, visiting ancestor’s graves, giving red envelopes, fireworks and watching lion and dragon dances.

Universal Door Meditation Center | Jan. 14 & Jan. 15 from 10 AM – 10 PM
People of all ages, cultures and backgrounds are welcome to celebrate at the Universal Door Meditation Center to meet Awakened Zen Masters Thich Dieu Thien and Thich Thong Hoi. People will have a chance to visit several booths for an awake tour, soy candles, snacks, games while watching a dragon dance.
POST Houston | Sunday, Jan. 15 at 12 PM – 2 AM
The trendy Houston hotspot, POST Houston, is celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with an Asian pop-up market, two lion dance performances and a 21+ party at the X Atrium. People who wish to attend the Lunar New Year Night Party must RSVP to enter.
The Ion | Sunday, Jan. 19 from 4 PM – 8 PM
#HaveANiceDayHTX at the Ion’s Lunar New Year celebration. Local food and product vendors will be showing off their crafts at the community market event.
Chinese Community Center | Jan. 21 at 10 AM – 4PM
Since 2003, Houston Asiatown holds an annual tradition to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the city’s diversity. The Chinese Community Center invites the community to a family-friendly outdoor event.
Pearland Chinese Association | Jan. 21 at 2 PM – 10 PM
The Pearland Chinese Association and the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (AYLUS) welcome the community to a Lunar New Year festival and gala at Pearland Junior High West. The event will feature performances from artists, students and residents. Starting at 2 p.m., guests will enjoy an afternoon creating origami and ceramic art, games, food trucks, robotics and more. The Lunar New Year Gala will begin at 7 p.m.
Ginger Kale at Hermann Park | Jan. 21 at 11 AM – 12 PM
Enjoy a lion dance performance outdoors at Ginger Kale near the gift shop.
Discovery Green | Sunday, Jan 22 at 5 PM – 8 PM
Enjoy an evening at Discovery Green at the beat of the drums. Discovery Green will host a family event with food vendors, Nanta Drumming and a puppet dance.
Nails by Yen| Saturday, Jan. 28 2 PM – 3 PM
Community members can watch a lion dance outside of Nails by Yen in Sugar Land.
POST Houston | Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 PM – Sunday, Feb 5 11:30 PM
Enjoy arts and crafts, a night market food vendor, a dance flash mob and light sculpture presentation during the POST’s Lunar New Year Night Market during their two-day event.
