NFL Week 11: Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs still rule AFC West; more Sunday lessons

Chiefs 30, Chargers 27

Kansas City: This is Patrick Mahomes’ league. When the Chiefs got the ball back with 1:46 left on the clock, you knew it was coming. You knew Mahomes would deliver. Cool as could be, masterful in his delivery, ballgame. It’s what Mahomes does. Of course, the winning connection was Mahomes to Travis Kelce with 31 seconds left. But the Chiefs have to be encouraged by the many contributions from all of the youngsters working to establish themselves as playmakers in the offense. … Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, Chris Jones isn’t getting nearly enough recognition for the dominant season he’s delivering to key Kansas City’s defense. His second sack of the game (ninth of the season) couldn’t have been more clutch. … Lastly, so much for the rest of the AFC West threatening Kansas City’s supremacy. The 8-2 Chiefs have now swept the second-place team in the division and hold a three-game lead over the Chargers and a five-game lead over the Raiders and Broncos.

Chiefs comeback to defeat the Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 on Sunday night, sweeping the season series against their AFC West rival. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Down 27-23 late in the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs on a six-play, 75-yard drive, capped off with a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce.
  • The Chiefs rallied after being down 20-13 at halftime, outscoring the Chargers 17-7 in the second half.
  • The Chiefs improve to 8-2, extending their AFC West lead. Kansas City remains the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

Chiefs thrive despite missing several receivers

No Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs’ longest-tenured receiver. No JuJu Smith-Schuster, the team’s new No. 1 receiver. No Kadarius Toney, the team’s newest receiver, a dynamic addition to the league’s most potent offense. Even in unusual and unfavorable circumstances, Mahomes, the league’s most talented quarterback, orchestrated yet another dramatic comeback against the Chargers, the divisional rival he has beaten in such a way time after time after time.
