Veteran Michigan EDGE defender enters NCAA Transfer Portal

For the second time Tuesday, a veteran Michigan defensive end has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal over spending a sixth season at Michigan. This time, it’s longtime edge defender Taylor Upshaw, who entered the portal Tuesday evening.

Upshaw, the son of former NFL standout Regan Upshaw and brother of former Clemson captain Regan Upshaw II, recorded 35 tackles in his career, including 10.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. He also has recorded 43 quarterback pressures (20 this season), an interception and a forced fumble in his career.

This season, Upshaw played the 16th-most snaps among Michigan defenders, and the fourth-most among edge defenders. He never cracked the starting lineup, however, and played just 16 snaps in the Fiesta Bowl against TCU.

Next season, the Wolverines return Jaylen Harrell, Braiden McGregor and Derrick Moore at the edge position, and bring in touted Coastal Carolina transfer Josaiah Stewart. In addition, Mike Morris and Eyabi Okie are eligible to return, though neither have stated if they will do so or not. Having served as a graduate student at Michigan each of the last two seasons, Upshaw’s decisions could be as much about academics as athletics.

In addition to Upshaw, Michigan has seen edge defender Julius Welschof and linebacker Deuce Spurlock enter the portal this week. Prior to the Fiesta Bowl, Cade McNamara, Erick All, Louis Hansen, George Rooks and Alan Bowman all entered the Transfer Portal as well.

For a full collection on the players coming to Michigan and transferring out of the program, be sure to check out the 247Sports Michigan Transfer Portal page. The Transfer Portal winter window will remain open until Jan. 18, then reopen in the spring.
